The post was really only regarding this particular error message, that's why it is so short :-). I will write a longer post about setting up search entirely later on when I got the time. To answer your specific question, you should go to "Central Administration" -> "Operations" > "Services on Server". When I last saw the greyed out "Select Windows SharePoint Services search server" it was because the "Windows SharePoint Services Search Service" was stopped. My "Office SharePoint Server Search" service was started, but that is not enough. So: 1: Click "Windows SharePoint Services Search Service". 2: Under "Service Account" enter the account you want search to run under. I use an account named MOSS_Search_Service. 3: Under "Content Access Account"enter the content account. This account will be used to access the content. I used MOSS_Search_Service here too. I left the rest at default. You should not be able to select the server for search that was greyed out before. If not then "Office SharePoint Server Search" must be activated too.
