Your search cannot be completed because this site is not assigned to an indexer

First time I tried to setup search on SharePoint I ran into this. Just thought I would share it in case I’m not the only one.

The problem is you have not specified which server should do the searching. So no matter what you have setup, it will still not work.

You can choose the search server like this:

Go to “Central admin”.

Choose “Application Management” tab.

Go to “Content Databases” under “Sharepoint Web Application Management”.

Ensure your web application is selected.

Click on the content database.

Under “Search Server”, select the server you wish to do the searching in the dropdownlist.

That’s it.

The Search Server field is grayed out. What do I have to do next? Thank you for any assistance.

      Hi John

The problem for you seems that the search service is not started up.
The post was really only regarding this particular error message, that’s why it is so short :-) .
I will write a longer post about setting up search entirely later on when I got the time.

To answer your specific question, you should go to “Central Administration” -> “Operations” > “Services on Server”.
When I last saw the greyed out “Select Windows SharePoint Services search server” it was because the “Windows SharePoint Services Search Service” was stopped.
My “Office SharePoint Server Search” service was started, but that is not enough.
      So:
1: Click “Windows SharePoint Services Search Service”.
2: Under “Service Account” enter the account you want search to run under. I use an account named MOSS_Search_Service.
3: Under “Content Access Account”enter the content account. This account will be used to access the content. I used MOSS_Search_Service here too.

I left the rest at default.

You should not be able to select the server for search that was greyed out before.
If not then “Office SharePoint Server Search” must be activated too.

      Best Regards,
      Thomas Lund
